The Staff Selection Commission (SSC) released the Combined Graduate Level (CGL) Examination 2026 official notification on its website (ssc.gov.in) on 21 May 2026. This is one of the most sought-after central government recruitment exams, offering Group B and Group C posts across dozens of ministries, departments, and constitutional bodies of the Government of India.

With approximately 12,256 vacancies across pay levels 6, 7, and 8 — covering roles from Inspector of Income Tax to Assistant Section Officer in CSS — SSC CGL 2026 is a massive opportunity for every graduate aspiring to a central government career.

In this post we break down the full notification so you can apply confidently, understand the exam structure, and begin the right preparation strategy immediately.

🆕 What's New in SSC CGL 2026 — Key Changes

If you appeared in SSC CGL in previous years, pay close attention. This year's notification introduces several important changes that directly affect how you prepare and how you apply.

⏱️
Sectional Timers Introduced in Tier-1 & Tier-2 SSC CGL 2026 introduces sectional timing in both Tier-1 and Tier-2 exam patterns. You will have a fixed time window per section — once a section closes, you cannot go back. This is a major strategic shift: you can no longer skip a hard section and return to it later. Practising with sectional timers from day one is now non-negotiable.
📋
12,256 Vacancies Across 40 Graduate-Level Posts This cycle announces approximately 12,256 vacancies spread across 40 graduate-level posts in various central government ministries and departments — one of the larger vacancy announcements in recent CGL cycles.
📸
Live Photograph Mandatory — Pre-Saved Photos Not Allowed Candidates must now capture a live photograph using a webcam or smartphone during the online application process. Uploading a pre-existing saved photograph is no longer permitted and will result in outright rejection of your application. Ensure you have a working webcam or smartphone camera before starting your form.
📄
Paper-3 Introduced in Tier-2 for AAO / AAcO Posts A new Paper-3 (General Studies — Finance & Economics) is introduced in Tier-2, exclusively for candidates shortlisted for Assistant Audit Officer (AAO) and Assistant Accounts Officer (AAcO) posts. If you are targeting these high-pay Level-8 posts, you now need to prepare an additional 100-question Finance & Economics paper in addition to the compulsory Paper-1.

⏱️ Sectional timers change everything. Our SSC CGL 2026 Tier-1 Test Series includes sectional timer-enabled mocks so you train under the exact conditions of the 2026 exam — not last year's format.

SSC CGL 2026 Tier-1 Preparation Strategy

With roughly 3 months between notification and Tier-1, a focused approach is far more effective than random study. Here is a proven roadmap:

01
Understand the New Sectional Timing Rule FirstUnlike previous years, you can no longer bank time from an easy section and use it on a hard one. Each section locks when its timer ends. Start every practice session with section-wise timed slots from week one.
02
Prioritise Quantitative Aptitude & ReasoningThese two sections have the highest score differentiation. Build strong fundamentals in number systems, geometry, and logical puzzles. Two hours per day for 8 weeks creates a strong base.
03
Build a Daily Current Affairs HabitGA questions cover static GK and current affairs from the last 6–8 months. Read a daily GK digest every morning and maintain topic-wise notes on polity, economy, science, and sports.
04
English: Grammar + Vocabulary + Speed ReadingFocus on grammar rules and vocabulary. Practice reading comprehension daily to improve speed and accuracy within the section's locked time window.
05
Take Sectional-Timer Full Mocks from Week 5Practice without sectional timers will NOT prepare you for 2026. Our Tier-1 Test Series runs mocks with section-locking exactly as the real exam will.
06
Revise & Consolidate in the Final 3 WeeksNo new topics in the final 3 weeks. Focus on revision of weak areas, repeat mocks for speed, and maintain a formula / static GK sheet.

💡 Smart preparation = sectional-timer mocks + analysis + revision. Our SSC CGL 2026 Tier-1 Test Series gives you all three — designed to match the official 2026 exam format exactly.
