GATE Data Science & Artificial Intelligence (DA) is now an eligible subject for IAF AE(L) officer entry. Here is everything you need to know — eligibility, vacancies, process, and strategy — for AFCAT 02/2026.
The Indian Air Force offers a special officer entry route — the GATE Score Entry — for engineering graduates who have cleared GATE in specific disciplines. Unlike the standard AFCAT route, this pathway allows candidates to skip the written AFCAT examination entirely and be shortlisted directly for the AFSB (Air Force Selection Board) interview based on their GATE score.
This entry is specifically for the Ground Duty (Technical) Branch, under which IAF commissions officers as Aeronautical Engineers in two sub-branches:
GATE DA (Data Science and Artificial Intelligence) falls under the eligible subjects for the AE(L) branch — making it a genuine and official pathway for GATE DA aspirants to become IAF officers.
GATE Score Entry candidates are exempted from the AFCAT written exam and there is zero application fee. The GATE score serves as your screening filter, and you go directly to AFSB if shortlisted.
Yes — absolutely. As per the official AFCAT 02/2026 notification (para 5.3.2.3), candidates qualifying in any of the following 5 GATE subjects are eligible for the AE(L) branch under GATE Score Entry:
The starred card above is GATE DA — your paper. You are competing with candidates from CS, EC, EE, and IN — but your GATE DA score is fully valid and officially recognized for the AE(L) branch entry.
Your B.Tech/B.E. degree discipline must also be from one of the 133 eligible disciplines listed in para 5.3.2.1 of the notification. Most CS, IT, AI, ECE, EEE, and related engineering branches are covered. Check the full list before applying.
| Requirement | Details |
|---|---|
| Degree | B.E./B.Tech (minimum 4-year course) from a recognized university in one of the 133 eligible disciplines |
| GATE Score | Valid GATE DA (or CS/EC/EE/IN) score obtained within 3 years preceding July 2027 (i.e., GATE 2025, 2026, or 2027) |
| 10+2 | Must have passed with Physics and Mathematics at 10+2 level |
| Backlog | No current backlog at the time of application |
| Final Year Students | Can apply, but must complete degree by 30 May 2027 |
You must have been born between 02 July 2001 and 01 July 2007 (both dates inclusive).
Candidate must be an Indian citizen as per the Indian Citizenship Act, 1955. Candidates must be unmarried at the time of commencement of the course (July 2027). Marriage is not permitted during training.
Since most GATE DA candidates come from CS/IT/AI backgrounds, you likely qualify. Key eligible disciplines include:
As per the official AFCAT 02/2026 notification, the tentative vacancies for GATE Score Entry in the AE(L) branch are:
| Entry Type | Branch | PC Men | PC Women | SSC Men | SSC Women | Total* |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| GATE Score Entry | AE(L) | 1 | 1 | 12 | 3 | 17 |
| GATE Score Entry | AE(M) | 1 | 1 | 6 | 1 | 9 |
| AFCAT Entry | AE(L) | 2 | 2 | 107 | 25 | 136 |
Vacancies are tentative and subject to change. Actual intake depends on organizational requirements, training slot availability, and vacancies accruing in July 2027. IAF reserves the right to revise final numbers.
| Factor | Permanent Commission (PC) | Short Service Commission (SSC) |
|---|---|---|
| Duration | Till superannuation | 10 years (extendable by 4 years) |
| Pension | Entitled | Not entitled |
| PC Conversion | — | Possible, subject to vacancies & merit |
| Vacancies (AE(L) GATE) | 1 (Men) + 1 (Women) | 12 (Men) + 3 (Women) |
Register with Aadhaar, fill personal & qualification details. Select "GATE Score Entry" as your exam category (Para 3.1.3 in the application form).
Select B.Tech subject (your engineering discipline), GATE subject as "DA" (Data Science and Artificial Intelligence), GATE qualified year, and your GATE score.
GATE Score Entry candidates are completely exempted from the ₹550 + GST application fee applicable to regular AFCAT candidates.
IAF will prepare a merit list of GATE Score Entry candidates. You do NOT sit for AFCAT. Shortlisted candidates are called directly for AFSB testing.
Attend AFSB at one of 5 centers: Dehradun, Mysuru, Gandhinagar, Varanasi, or Guwahati. Stage I (OIR + PPDT), Stage II (Psychology, Group Tests, Interview) over 5 days.
Recommended candidates undergo Special Medical Board (SMB). Those declared medically fit and ranked in the final merit list are offered commissioning.
~62 weeks of training at Air Force Academy (AFA), Dundigal. Flying Officer rank on commissioning.
Original GATE scorecard, B.Tech certificates and all semester mark sheets, Matriculation certificate (DOB proof), Class 12 certificate, Aadhaar, and 20 passport-size photographs. You may be asked to physically login to the GATE website and authenticate your score. Failure to do so = disqualification.
This is the biggest advantage of GATE Score Entry. The entire selection process has three stages after application:
| Stage | What Happens | GATE Score Entry? |
|---|---|---|
| AFCAT Written Exam 08 Aug 2026 |
100 MCQs, 2 hours — English, GK, Numerics, Reasoning | ✅ EXEMPTED |
| GATE Shortlisting | Merit list based on GATE score; candidates called for AFSB | Your gateway |
| AFSB Stage I | OIR Test (verbal + non-verbal reasoning) + PPDT (Picture Perception & Discussion) | Must qualify |
| AFSB Stage II | Psychology tests, Group Discussion, Group Tasks, Interview (5 days total) | Must qualify |
| Special Medical Board | Comprehensive physical & medical examination at AF hospital | Must be fit |
| Final Merit List | Based on GATE score + AFSB score; branch allocated per vacancies | Rank = offer |
AFSB is a 5-day personality and aptitude assessment. Unlike an academic exam, it evaluates Officer-Like Qualities (OLQs): leadership, intelligence, team spirit, communication, decisiveness, and physical fitness. The key areas are:
On commissioning as a Flying Officer (the entry rank for all new IAF officers):
| Component | Amount |
|---|---|
| Basic Pay (Level 10) | ₹56,100 – ₹1,77,500 / month |
| Military Service Pay (MSP) | ₹15,500 / month (fixed) |
| Technical Allowance | Additional (Technical branch) |
| Transport Allowance | Based on posting city |
| HRA | Or free accommodation in air force station |
| Medical | Free for self and family (ECHS post-retirement) |
| Insurance | ₹1.25 Crore coverage while in service |
| Flight Cadet Stipend | ₹56,100/month during 1-year training |
For an AE(L) officer at a major air force base, the effective take-home after allowances and free accommodation/food during training typically comes to ₹80,000–₹1,00,000+ per month at entry level, with rapid increments.
Since IAF shortlists GATE Score Entry candidates purely on their GATE score, your score is your first and most important filter. With only 17 vacancies in AE(L) and competition from CS, EC, and EE candidates, a strong GATE DA score is non-negotiable.
The GATE DA paper covers: Probability & Statistics, Linear Algebra, Calculus & Optimization, Programming & Data Structures, Algorithms, DBMS & Data Warehousing, Machine Learning, and AI. Focused preparation for 6–12 months typically gets aspirants to the 600–800 score range.
